This week marks the 1 year anniversary of Clandestine Anomaly‘s launch on the iOS AppStore. Our first bold step into interactive entertainment started with a simple and in many ways naive idea to create a sic-fi epic that turned the actual world into a canvas for storytelling through merging GPS with Augmented Reality.

Looking back on a year of Clandestine Anomaly we can recognize that development of such an experience would be challenging for anyone regardless of their experience. When the founders of ZenFri started development they not only had only a few thousand dollars to their name, they didn’t even know a single coder, game artist, or producer. In fact they didn’t even know anyone who had even attempted to make a video game.

Yet, after four years of hard learning, lucky breaks and perseverance, our little Winnipeg-based company launched one of the first experiences of its kind, and was recognized internationally for our technical and design innovations.

In hindsight, it was all quite a wild ride.

Clandestine wasn’t the only time anyone has tried to break new ground in this emerging medium (Shadow Cities, IngressParallel Kingdom) but with the extremely successful release of Niantic LabsPokemon Go this week, we’re certain the parthenon of location based augmented reality experiences is about grow like it never has before.

As we continue to support Clandestine as we did through a recent major content update on iOS (which will be coming soon to Android), we’re also working on a lot of wild things in this space, in VR and true to ZenFri form in film, visual art and poetry. We can’t wait to show you what’s in store next for us and for Clandestine, all we can say for certain here today is that Clandestine has helped propel us forward as creatives and as a company in ways we never imagined and there is no going back.

Most importantly though, we’d like to thank each and every person who supported us along the way, from fellow mad-scientist creatives, like the folks at Talking Dog Studios whose help in the early days we will forever be grateful, to the developers that put their hearts into making a unique game and ensuring we shipped, to our families, and to every person who picked up a copy of the game, talked to us on social media or covered our game.

We thank you all for being part of journey. A journey that lead to the release of Clandestine: Anomaly  1 year ago, and which sparked the beginning of a new phase of our company.
