Reality is awesome. Video games are also pretty awesome. Wouldn’t it be great to bring your video games into the real world? Clandestine: Anomaly does just that.

Augmented Reality (or AR) is the process of superimposing digital content into our real world environment. We think this technology will turn our environments into a fantastic digital playground where you can play anywhere, at any time. This is no small feat, but it is partly achieved by utilizing the hardware within a modern mobile phone.

Each handheld capable of running Clandestine: Anomaly will contain a specific set of hardware that is now common to mobile devices. The mobile phone’s rear facing camera identifies and  interprets visual data. The phone’s gyroscope determines it’s position relative to the earth, the compass determines which direction the player is facing, while the accelerometer detects movement.

With the combination of these three pieces of technology, your mobile device is able to display 3D models onto the image captured by your camera. When you move, the digital models remain fixed to their intended location as if they actually exist within that space. Even if you tilt or rotate your device, the 3D models maintain the illusion of a logical, gravitational pull.

Clandestine: Anomaly takes this digital layer over reality and utilizes it in a unique way. Using your mobile device’s GPS location, the game is able to place extraterrestrial foes, advanced technology and a crashed alien spacecraft into your neighbourhood. The process that allows for this locationally based gameplay is called Geolocation. To put it simply, geolocation is the identification of the real-world location of an object. Clandestine: Anomaly uses geolocation to detect your mobile device’s location and using its internet connection the game space is constructed.

If a location is shown on your map to have alien activity, AR mode allows you to see and fight in the conflict in front of you. Clandestine: Anomaly’s use of augmented reality allows you to see the colossal Command  Center looming above, and construct additional defences you as you fight back against the swarms of Leachers.
